Marine Coatings

Polymeryx has been challenged to solve some of the most difficult problems in the polymer industry.  We help to position our customers in market leadership positions by developing novel technologies, products, processes and materials that have provided a differentiation strategy as well as a few market disrupters. One of our recent challenges is to develop a new polymer based marine coating to solve some significant challenges faced in marine coatings.

Through our work we find opportunities to solve material and industry challenges, which has led us to this point.  We are working on a patent pending commercial polymer coating that we believe there are significant opportunities for in the marine coating industry.  The marine coating industry was valued at an estimated $8.7 Billion in 2023 with projected growth of 5-7% through 2028. 

Industry Needs

  • Reduce Friction:

    • Increased fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

    • Potential operational benefits of increased speed and endurance.

  • Reduce or Eliminate Biofouling:

    • Surfaces exposed to or immersed in fresh, brackish, or saltwater.

    • When a hull is covered by only 10% barnacle fouling, 36% more power from the engine is required to maintain the same speed through the water

  • Antifouling Paint Sector:

    • Positioned at 64% market share of marine coating market

    • Self-cleaning

    • Lower VOCs, higher solids and less harmful or biocide elimination

  • Biocide Elimination:

    • The current number of effective biocides that meet regulatory requirements has decreased substantially.

    • Metal oxide biocides

    • The organotin biocide tributyltin, currently banned.

    • A totally different strategy is needed to satisfy ultimate environmental concerns and regulations in harmony with antifouling product characteristics.

Our Coating Solution

Polymeryx' new Polymax TM patent pending coating addresses a significant portion of the challenges faced in the industry:

  • Reduced Biofouling

    • Prevent the growth of barnacles, algae, and other marine organisms that can impede speed, increase fuel consumption, and require costly cleaning procedures.

    • Hydrophobic, enviromentally friendly, biocide free,  PFAS free

  • Reduced Drag:

    • The coating has a low coefficient of friction

    • Increased Speed

    • Less fuel consumption

  • Antifouling

    • Organisims show some growth in vessels that are not moved for a significant time frame, however due to the hydrophobic polymer, it becomes self cleaning underway over time.
